UK plantmaker Primetals Technologies had a plan to upgrade Mexican steelmaker Talleres y Aceros S.A. de C.V. (TYASA)'s caster, which is 6-strand billet, bloom, and beam-blank multi-format caster. This improvement gives the company the ability to produce special bar quality (SBQ) steel grades for the automotive industry. The Mexican automotive industry has a significant demand growth for high-strength steel.

The caster produces 1.2 million tons of 130-450 mm billets/blooms and 300*200*80mm beams/blanks yearly. The available steel grades include low-carbon, medium-carbon, high-carbon, special bar qualities, and automotive grades.

In addition to the multi-format caster, Primetals Technologies also supplied other equipment for TYASA, including anEAF Quantum electric arc furnace, two twin ladle furnaces, a twin vacuum degasser, a Castrip plant, and a reversing cold mill.
