Press Metal Aluminium Holdings Berhad, a Malaysia-based aluminum producer, said a fire accident occurred at its Phase 3 Smelter in the Samalaju Industrial Park at night on Monday (September 9).
The fire affected 100 of 300 pots at the smelter, and Phases 1 and 2 were unaffected. Fortunately, no casualties were caused. The affected assets are fully covered by insurance.
This smelter is held by Press Metal Bintulu Sdn Bhd, Press Metal’s 80%-owned subsidiary. Press Metal said around 9% of the total smelting capacity, across Samalaju and Mukah, was impacted. Approximately 3% of the annual smelting capacity will be affected on a full-year basis. The resumption of the pot operations is expected to take about four months.
